THE COLLEGE COMPETITOR              Edition 1.10

Week one of the playoffs did not disappoint as each team had respectable fantasy games.  Based on recent fantasy play, both of the underdogs advanced to the second round.  Both games were very competitive, and each had an opportunity to win. The Scrub bowl provided some fireworks as the winning high score would indicate. There is no time to let up as the playoffs are now in full swing with two games left to decide the 2004 Champion. All the Scrub bowl teams will reload and have at it once again, and the losers of round one in the playoffs will square off in Scrub Bowl II. Here is a recap of round one playoff action.

Elephants @ Titans ; 108- 85 Elephants

In a rematch of one of the better games of the season, the Elephants battled back to defeat a strong Titan squad. In their first meeting, the Elephants built a seemingly insurmountable lead when Orton and Stubblefield combined for 77 points in an early morning game. The Titans rallied with an incredible comeback victory to ultimately win 121 – 103. This playoff contest started with the Elephants being in the hole early. After the Titans got a combined 45 points in the Thursday night game, the Pach squad could have lost faith and phoned in a performance. After failing to score better then 62 the final three weeks of the season, the Pach turned in an inspired fantasy performance. By the end of the morning Georgia game in which the Bulldogs tore off 62 points against a lowly Kentucky squad, The Pach had already bested Williams and Lefores. The Elephants had crawled out of the early hole, and had begun their stampede to the dismay of the Titan Coach. Stubblefield responded with a great fantasy game.  4 of his 15 catches, 48 yards, and a TD came in the closing seconds of the Purdue contest. The Virginia Def added 22 with an unlikely shutout over Maryland. With another strong performance by Arrington, The Titans still had a shot to win with WR Jarrett and their Kicker going in late games. Jarrett had scored 33 points in week seven, and had 18 last week. The Titan Coach felt he had a chance until the game came on. You could not see the field through the fog in Oregon, and because Jarrett depends on a vertical game with his 6 five frame, this did not look good. Jarrett posted a zero when the ball could not be thrown higher then 10 feet in the air because of the bad visibility. The Elephants won a hard fought game, and returned to their early season high scoring form with a great playoff victory. Good luck the rest of the way Pach! As a sidenote, the editors of the Competitor wonder why Titan RB Arrington is not getting any heisman hype. He has had a great season averaging 150 yards plus a game. Give the Senior Bear some Love People!!!!!

Stingrays @ Maulers ; 90 – 75 Rays

The Rays stun the Maulers to advance to the second round. The Ray Coach ousts his Son Mike just as he ousted Son Jeff in the second round last year. Like last year, he did it with stellar play from receivers. McCarthur excelled again after being acquired in a trade with a strong 23. Warren had his best game of the year with a powerful 27-point performance. With the help of their Florida QB, The Rays were able to pull out a hard fought 15 point victory. They were able to do this with Running Back Daniels on the IR, and Bush lost in the Fog in Corvallis. Coach Merv always seems to get the Win when needed. The Maulers had a great season despite starting slow at the beginning of the year when they lost first rounder Davis to injury in the first game. Davis pitched in with 17pts to help the Mauler squad in the Post season. The Utah QB was once again a fantasy god posting 32 points. What destroyed the Maulers chances of a playoff victory was the fact that the Utah QB, having a great game, was throwing to StingRay receiver Warren. As the Maulers helped themselves, they helped their opponent, basically nullifying any gain each time Warren caught the ball in the endzone. This is always painful!!! Tough break for a strong Mauler Team. You had a fine run Coach Mike. The Maulers get to square of against Brother Jeff’s Titan team in Scrub Bowl II. Rumor has it a little side bet has been offered to sweeten the contest. At press time there has been no confirmation from the Maulers that the challenge has been accepted. The always resourceful Rays advance to the second round to challenge the Swingers.

THE SCRUB BOWL; ROUND ONE – DRAGONFARTS 132 POINTS

To those teams that do not make the playoffs, The Scrub Bowl is another chance to remain involved and compete. To win the Scrub Bowl, you must best five teams. A certain amount of pride and prestige is attached to this game as it is not easy to beat five teams in fantasy ball, heck it’s hard to beat one on any given day. The DragonFarts responded with an incredible score of 132! Harris reverted to week one form with a great game. Kay-Jay’s Jeckyl and Hyde performances frustrated the Fart Coach all year. Great Game Dave! Congratulations on the win. Coming in second was the Lightning with another strong game posting a stellar 108. They have been on a tear, and have to be lamenting their dismal start to begin the year. Good Luck to all the Scrub Bowl teams in the second round. I hope all remain involved and play to win!!!

We now move on to round two of the playoffs. Elephants @ The Contributors, Rays @ Sirloins. Two will advance to the Championship and a shot at College Fantasy Glory. It’s a long road; the end is in sight. Good Luck to all!

I Love this game! (Despite the fricken Georgia Bulldogs!) J
