THE COLLEGE COMPETITOR                  Edition 1.7

The action in week seven saw the return of the scoring that was absent the previous week. The 100 point plateau was crossed again, making it six out of seven weeks a team has reached the century mark. With the Titans 117, they were able to clinch the B division championship. The Contributors tightened their grip on the A division, and the C division is now in gridlock. Three in the division have records of 5-2 with 2 games remaining, and a conference game is on the horizon. The division leading Sirloins are holding on by a thread with a one-point advantage, and are looking to regain their early season form. The wildcard race is shaping up to be a fight for a final slot. The Stingrays hold the advantage, but it is not yet locked up. This might be the year that all four teams from a single division are playoff bound. Here is a recap of week seven action.

Cossacks @ Titans ; 117- 65 Titans.

The Titans exploded to improve to 6 –1 and win their division for the third year in a row.  Extremely effective running from Williams and Arrington was aided by the emergence of a new star in the land of Troy. The 6 foot five freshman Dwayne Jarrett showed why he is being compared to the departing superstar Mike Williams. If Jarrett can continue to produce, the Titans should be very competitive in the post season. The Titans still need to win to clinch a first round bye and a top seed in the playoffs, so they cannot yet celebrate the division championship. The Cossack squad has been maligned all year with bad luck. They made a great coaching move picking up the Clemson D to take advantage of a good match-up. Despite the 34 points generated, they lose once again.  The Cossack 74.1 scoring average is not representative of a 1 –6 team. They can’t seem to get a break, as demonstrated by the three Td’s from Deshawn Wynn instead of The Cossack back Fason. The Cossack campaign represents how tough fantasy ball can be on the psyche. Good luck in the Scrub Bowl Coach Maze!

Lightning @ Death ;  64 – 55 Lightning

The Lightning continue to salvage their season after a dismal start with yet another win. They scored just enough to damper the Death hope of a playoff run. Great games from QB White and Freshman GTech Stud Johnson lead the way for back-to-back victories for the Lightning squad. It may be too little too late, but it is something for the young franchise to build upon. The Death get an incredible game from the Michigan freshman RB Hart as well as productive games from Johnson, as well as C and D Williams, but get let down by their Defense as the Ohio State Squad Imploded. Tressel ball is officially dead as the Buckeye Defense has taken its cue from the anemic offense. The Death squad is full of talent but lacks an ingredient to consistently win. This is a good squad; the Competitor staff is at a loss to explain the lack of success.

Contributors @ Swinging Sirloins ; 88 – 72 Contributors

In a very competitive game, the Contributors continue their quest for the A division crown. Their first round draft pick is now proving his worth with a stellar performance posting 28 points. The continued consistent play of WVA receiver Henry is proving very valuable as he scored once again. Utah WR Savoy continues to impress with yet another great game. The Contributors lead the A Division by a game, and because of their consistent bonus performances, they lead by five points with two games remaining. Another win and they will clinch the Division Championship. The Sirloins are scoring, but have fallen off their early season pace. Benson continued his heisman run, and the Colorado kicker booted a 60 yarder! The Sirloins still have a solid team and may be saving their output for the postseason. If they want to win the division and get a first round bye, they must produce the final two games. They have Elephants and Maulers biting their heels!!!.

Pride @ Maulers ; 82 – 66 Maulers

The Maulers continue their winning ways to get the win and keep the heat on the Sirloins. A great game from their Utah QB lead the way posting a 37. RB Whitehead is proving to be a good free agent pick-up contributing 22. Davis was slowed a bit, but his output was enough to clinch a victory. With two games remaining, the Maulers have a chance to win their division with a very productive team. The Pride falter when they could not afford to. Zeros from RB Shelton and Barber sealed their fate in a tough loss. The Memphis pitch and catch team produced, but it was not enough. They lost ground in both the wildcard and division races, and must rebound if they want to follow up on last years’ great championship campaign.

Redhawks @ Elephants ; 62 – 46 The Pach

The Elephants squeak one out with a lackluster performance. Rightly, and deservedly so as their two losses were gut wrenching, high scoring affairs. The Pachyderms did just enough to stay in the hunt in the great C division race. The Purdue Batman and Robin team of Orton and Stubblefield was tamed by a very solid Badger defense. The Elephants are in a barnburner with the Swingers and Maulers, and no doubt will put up a good fight to the end. The Hawks lose yet again with frustrating Zero performances from McClendon and Moss. Moss did a disappearing Act, and McClendon continued his accident prone, rubber band Hammy ways. McClendon has been one step away from an ambulance since his freshman year…what a Bust!  Sproles is a great player, but thus far is struggling through a long season. The Hawks still have a shot at the postseason, but with the Death, they are very long shot to reach the Post Season.

DragonFarts @ Stingrays ; 94 – 75 Rays

The Rays continue their quest to reach the postseason once again with a very good team performance. Daniels and Bush were solid, and McArthur has excelled since being traded from the Lightning. The Cal receiver is enjoying his new surroundings and had another great game in the sunny surroundings out west with the Cal Rays. The Clemson QB was given a chance to start, but failed miserably once again for the Stingray squad. In a show of teamwork, the Rays RB’s Bush and Daniels each tossed a Touchdown to pick up the slack of the Clemson Slinger. Now that shows depth! The Dfarts had a very good scoring game but could not produce enough for the win.  Their Auburn QB continued to excel in the Westcoast offense, and Moore earned his paycheck for the week. Harris continued to disappoint posting a zero. The Farts really need his output, but continue to be frustrated by his McClendon like sick bed routine. The DragonFarts still have a shot at a wildcard birth, but need to be perfect and receive a little bit of help. They have a good team, they still have a shot.

Only two weeks left in the season and many teams are on the bubble. Who will emerge the Champion in 2004? Match-ups will continue to be all important,  as well as the ability to avoid the injury bug. It has been a great season thus far. The last two weeks will be exciting, who can remain consistent? Who has made the right moves to win the trophy? We shall see…..

I Love this Game!                                 Jeff Myers
