THE COLLEGE COMPETITOR                             Edition 1.2

Week 2 saw some explosive action as 4 teams topped the century mark. That is nine teams in two weeks! The week demonstrated how hard it is to consistently win, as only two teams remain undefeated. It was a very competitive week with exhilaration for some, and extreme heartbreak for others.  This year roster depth and the ability to avoid injury will determine the 2004 champion. Here is a recap of the second week’s action.

Swingin Sirloins @ Cossacks ; 107-76 Loins

The new franchise on the block continues to impress with a victory over the Cossacks.  Led by the West Virginia QB and the Touchdown machines Benson and Lundy, The Cossacks were grilled and marinated. The Sacks had very strong performances, but their number 1 pick played like Cobb salad, and the teen phenom from Georgia was worse for Ware and received bruised lungs. The Loins remain undefeated and look to be a force the rest of the season.

Maulers @ Lightning ; 59-42 Lightning

Although the Lightning received another zero from their #1 pick, they struck enough to shock the Maulers into an 0-2 start.  The Lightning received the expected lift from the Heisman winner and a huge 55 yarder from field goal kicker Nugent to get their first franchise win. The Maulers are still trying to find their teeth, and have not recovered from losing #1 pick Davis to injury.  The GM hopes to get him back in a few weeks, but until then they may struggle to score.  This game is forgettable, as the combined score would have not been enough to best the top 4 teams this week.

Redhawks @ Contributors ; 85 – 46 Contributors

The Contributors had strong contributions from the Cal QB and receivers Henry and Savoy to get the Hawks seeing red for yet another week.  The Hawks could not take flight as their team lacked consistency.  A zero from fantasy stud Sproles sank the Birds to 0-2. The Contributors rise to the top of the A division with a 1-1 record with two top six finishes.  The Bonus points may play an important role this year.

Dragonfarts @ Pride ; 118-44 Pride

The defending champs rebounded from a week one loss by extinguishing the Dfarts with a convincing display of power and Pride. They had scoring from every position to serve notice that they are going for back to back championships. The Dfarts came crashing to earth from last week’s heights when top performer Harris went down with injury. The rest of the squad collapsed as the top Dfart was the kicker; this is never a good sign. Both teams are now 1-1 with identical points.

Elephants @ Titans ; 121-103 Titans

This game had the look of an early blowout as The Pachs Purdue Hook-up of Orton and Stubblefield had an incredible day. The Purdue QB posted a truly amazing score of 50, and Stubblefield was at the end of 3 of his 5 Tds for a strong 27. 77pts were on the board before the Titans squad even took the field. Subpar performances from the rest of the Elephants squad allowed the Titans to get back in it. Number two Titan Pick Arrington went off for the second straight week to get the Titans going.

With the explosion of Deangelo Williams, the comeback was looking like a possibility. With a bizarre finish to the Georgia Tech game, the Titan Qb was able to post an 18 that proved the difference. An incredible comeback was complete. The Titans remain undefeated to lead the B Division. A tough loss for the Pachyderms.

Stingrays @ Death ; Death 79-76

A game decided by 3 points is sure to drive coach’s nuts. The game started on a low note for the Death as their stud QB was thrown to the lions by the men of Troy. They got solid performances from the rest of their position players to get the tough victory. The Cadillac had a good test drive, and D Williams got the benefit of a required passing game when Oregon got behind. The Death should really thank Rix of the Seminoles for the win as his stinker of a performance allowed the game to go to overtime where Gore punched in a nice TD run. That Run would come back to haunt the Stingrays. The Rays had a solid outing from their D and Vincent, but could not get scores from either Daniels or Paris Warren. Instead of the Utah receiver getting a score, the Death Utah RB ran it in to put the nail in the coffin. The Death broke an 0-10 run with this much needed Victory.

Next weeks contests are crucial as we enter division play. The strong winds of Ivan may wreak further havoc as games have already been cancelled.  It should be a stormy weekend.

I love this game!
