Week #9

Week #9 was a high scoring affair that saw 9 teams score 150+ points. Some of the usual contenders were leading the way yet again, but we also saw a few teams come out of no where to lead the league with over 180 points for the week. We have reached the mid-point in the season and time is running out for many teams to get back in the playoff race. Will a trade help your team? Will the waiver wire provide a hidden gem or two? The Commish would like us to try something new this year, how about re-drafting at the mid-point???? All in favor???? Oh well, I guess my lame Death Squad will have to continue to pick up the rear in the playoff race.

The score reporting has been pretty good the last two weeks, and several teams continue to get a confirmed score sent in, using a Excel or Works file each and every week. Many thanks to those owners! A few teams continue to struggle with reporting scores. Yes, we all have busy lives but please try and make arrangements with your opponent or the Commish if you will be out of town. Most owners and the Commish will work with you, it is the uncertainty that drives us all nuts! We had a team this week that said they were busy and didn't track any scores, so just go with the other teams scores. This is not confirming the other teams scores!!!! Hence, a fine for not reporting scores. (more on that later). With so many close races in the side-pots, it is really unfair to all your fellow owners to just confirm scores that you have no idea whether they are correct or not. The Commish will not accept "just go with the other teams scores" as an acceptable form of confirmation. I did check these scores in question this week to ensure they were correct. I don't have enough free time to be doing this each week. If you are going to be away, please let me know (as many a team has already) and we will get the scores checked. If you are unsure of how this score reporting works (and I can't fathom at this point how you could), give Merv, Steve, and JR among others a call........ these guys get me a single confirmed boxscore each and every week.

Now on to the wacky week #9 Results...........

Oysters 4    Destroyers 1
JR and Corey's Oyster team is giving the Mariners a run for hottest baseball team in the land. The Oysters have surged ahead of the pack with another great week. The Oysters were lead this week by Giambi, Cirillo and Ichiro who all posted 20+ point weeks. JR seems to have the high scoring average in his sight, and his Oysters team has the guns to take over that side-pot before long. Steve's Destroyers post their normal 130+ week, but it wasn't near enough against the Mighty Oysters. Pudge is returning to form which is just what the Destroyers need to make a playoff push in the 2nd half of the season.

Puppies 160    Lightning 180
Day is night? Cats and dogs playing together? United flights on time? Is Armageddon upon us????? That is all I could come up with when I look at this boxscore. The slap hitting Lightning squad comes out of no-where to post 180 points for the week. Hmmm, isn't that normally a good two weeks for Larry's team???? Congrats on the great week Larry, hopefully your Lightning team has turned the corner, just in time to face the Commish's Death Squad this week. Just great......just f'n great! The Puppies caught a tough break on the schedule as they post a solid 160 points for the week, but the baseball gods were very nice with the schedule. Hmmm, maybe it was their way of sending a message on how important score reporting is to the integrity of the game!

Contributors 1    Fury 4
Coach Rogan gets a much needed 4 win week, along with a top 10 finish to move ever closer to the .500 mark. Coach Rogan has a knack for getting his teams to rally from a rough start, and this years Fury squad is no different. lead by Abreu's 40 point effort, the Fury looked like they just may make a run at the playoffs after all. Coach McSwain watches in horror as one-time Contributors player Abreu is a one-man wrecking ball against his team. The player Coach McSwain received in return posted a respectable 20 points for the week, but seems to have come up on the short end of the stick on that trade. Any truth to the rumors that Coach McSwain has been e-mailing the Reds daily begging Junior to suck it up and return to the field and lead the Contrib.....uh, Reds back into the playoff race?

X-Men 1    Hummers 4
Coach Tyler finally gets to reap the rewards of his trade a few weeks back, and his Hummers team puts a 173 point week to turn back the X-Men. Vladi finally gets on track with a monster 41 point week to lead the way to 4 ins and a top 10 finish. The Hummers sit a top the B Division right now, and look to have the 1-2 punch of Vladi/Carlos that just may be enough be a contender come playoff time. The X-Men suffer through a tough match-up, as Coaches Al/Mike's team slumps off from their recent run of solid scoring weeks. X-Men star Bonds continues to be the steal of the draft as he begins to chase Big Mac's 70 HR record, and he may just be enough to carry the X-Men to the playoffs. On a positive note for the X-men, their second part of the doubleheader is against the Death, so you can figure how that turned out.

Intimidators 4    Barracudas 1
This story is getting old..... Coach Trotta, please put down the Voodoo dolls and start playing baseball! Coach Trotta yet again mesmerizes an opponent into a sub 80 point week, and the Intimidators walk away with yet another 4 wins. The Intimidators are in the top 8 in wins so far, but have just 2 top 10 finishes. The opponents for the Intimidators have by far a league low scoring average. A collective "ya gotta be kidding me" can be heard each week from the league when the Intimidators' scores are posted. Would someone please teach Coach Trotta a lesson! Nice week Coach Houdini, keep up the smoke and mirrors show, it's working! Barracudas...... what happened????? Maybe it is time to turn over the controls to Pam full time if 78 points is the team could muster up. The 'Cudas are still at .500, so all is not lost, but any more 78 point weeks and the ship will be sinking quicker than.....ah, you know the rest.

Beginner's 4    Redbirds 1
Coach Alford's Luck team post another top 10 week as they take over the A Division lead. Thome leads the way this week as the Beginner's looked primed to make a serious run at the title. Coach Hanshe gets the top 10 finish this week, but only can manage 1 win against the Luck. Tough week as Punk Boy continues to impress, but just remember that as long as he remains active on your team, you have no chance at the playoffs. Wanna make a trade with the Commish? Punk Boy deserves to be on cellar dweller team like mine!

S.T.L 0    Wiseguys 5
Coach Cote has the 'Guys hitting on cylinders as the team gets the sweep and a top 10 finish to stay right in the thick of the playoff race. Matching 33 point weeks from Chipper and Green lead the way for the Wiseguys. Coach Cote has the Hummers in his view, and looks to make his way to the top of the B Division with a few more great weeks like this. Coach Woog said it best, "thanks for the beating, may I have another". Yes, Coach Woog you may have another......you played a doubleheader this week!

Blackjacks 2    Connection 3
HOLY COW BATMAN! Wow, what a weird match-up! Coach Phillips post a league weekly high score of 182 points. Nice job Bill!!!! Ohhh, wait one second...... the Blackjacks are rewarded with just 2 wins!!!! Go figure??? Coach Rose pulls out all the magic this week and somehow walks away with the 3 wins. How did this happen? The Connection scored a respectable 154 points for the week, but somehow managed to slip a 1 point game in their on Friday. The Blackjacks posted a 51-1 beating on Friday, but couldn't win another game during the week. Coach Phillips used that 50 point win on Friday to secure total points, but that was it. Geeezzz, you two need to play the Intimidators real soon and teach that Voodoo Doctor a lesson!

Death 2    Clippers 3
Coach Harry does a bang-up job with the scores this week and they added up to a 3-2 win for the struggling Clippers team. Another big week from Boone leads the way as the defending champs continue to find that repeating may just be to tough a task given the whole they have dug themselves so far this year. The Death squad........oh well, the Commish is now actually looking forward to College football season, it can't be worse than last year, can it???

Stingrays 3    Cobras 2
Coaches Merv/Mike get the 3-2 win over division rival Cobras, but slip out of the top spot in the A Division for the first time in months. The Stingrays get double-digit performances from all but 1 player to secure the 3rd win, but not quite enough to make the top 10. The Stingrays are still one of the teams to beat, but the Myers boyz have to be worried about the fact that no one seems to want to pitch to Manny any more, and that could hurt. Maybe a mid-season rule change to allow 2 points for intentional walks wouldn't be a bad idea! Frustrating is the only word that comes to mind, but would you pitch to Manny these days???? The Cobras continue to find ways to not get the needed wins to get Coach Maze back into the playoff race. Anaheim pitching continues to be solid, but to many Cobra players are struggling right now. Coach Maze may have to get a 2nd job to afford the $20 he is losing each week!

Wiseguys 2    Hummers 3
In the first doubleheader of the week, the Hummers get the 3 wins over division rival Wiseguys, in a high scoring affair 173-161. These two teams look to slug it out the rest of the way for the B Division title.

X-Men 3    Death 2
The X-Men bounce back to get 3 wins over the Death squad. Any other week for the X-Men and this is probably a sweep, but you can't play down to your competition if you want to be a playoff contender. The Death are still bad.

Intimidators 1    Oysters 4
JUSTICE AT LAST!!!!! This is what happens when you play a team that performs like it is supposed to, as they Oysters are one of the top teams in the league, and Coach Trotta's magic tricks ran out here. Way to go JR, the league thanks you! :>)

S.T.L. 0    Puppies 5
A first in the league this year, a team goes 0-10 for the week. Nice job Coach Woog! Unfortunately that was not a side-pot this year!

Week #8 Awards:

Player of the Week:    Guerrero, Hummers    41 Points
Vladi's big week lead the Hummers to a 8 win week and remain in the driver's seat in the B Division.

Pitching Staff of the Week:    Boston, Contributors    43 Points
Coach McSwain's pitching staff takes top honors for the 2nd week in a row. With the Stingrays LA staff facing injury troubles, the side-pot is Coach McSwain's for the taking.

Boxscore Blunder of the Week:    Coach Levitre, Puppies
No scores reported for the 2nd time this year, means the first $10 fine of the year is issued. Not to rehash old news, but saying "just go with the opponents scores" is not going to get it done.

Quote of the Week:    Coach Merv, Stingrays
"Confirmed scores.........Merv"    That is how I get scores from the Stingrays each and every week. Pass it along to your fellow owners.......

One last thing this week.............

GO SIXERS!!!!!!!!!!
