Week #9

Damn, is this football season getting frustrating! I know I am not alone, as Boyd finally explained to me what Wapati is. Apparently it means "sinking rock" in Indian. Yes, it was another week of further tightening of the playoff races. When I look at the standings it is strange to see just 4 teams with a record better than 5-4. I guess parity would be the correct term to describe the league this year. Fantasy football has a way of driving you nuts, whether it is rooting for a player to do well against your favorite NFL team or watching your team give away a win in the closing moments. There is nothing like being torn between rooting for something good to happen on the NFL field, knowing it will cost you in fantasy. I had that fine experience as I watched the Donkeys give away the game Monday night. I watched in horror as the Patriots made the smart move and took the safety, thus giving them the chance to beat the dreaded Donkeys. That textbook coaching decision cost me a win, as the safety gave the Cossacks the win over my Death. The pain was eased for a moment as I watched the Donkeys go 3 and out, and the Patriots drive right down and win the game. The jubilation was quickly replaced by frustration as I realized it is now a 3 game losing streak for the Death. To compound matters, I have 3 football teams (sorry, I can't actually count my college team as the 4th, as they aren't an actual football team, unless I took them to a high school fantasy league to compete), and with those 3 NFL teams I was a combined 15-3 after week 6. The Death are now 0-9 in the last 3 weeks. So for you struggling teams, I feel your pain!

Here is a look at the week 9 action:

Plague 61    Cows 48
A workmanlike performance for Bill/John as they get the win over the Cows. The Plague got solid efforts from Ward, Johnson and Tomlinson as they try and get themselves back into the playoff race. Now just 2 points out of a wildcard spot, no time to rest as a loss will be costly in the tough wildcard chase. Tom's Cows get a typical Corey Dillon effort with 0, but good news for all you Corey Dillon fans.... no car accidents on the way to the game this week! The Cows have their work cut out for them in the remaining weeks.

Doggy Style 64    Machine 62
Jeff/Scott get a win as their Doggy Style narrowly escape the upset bid by the Machine. Nice call on the bye week QB for the Style as Pennington steps in for McNair and puts up 18 to lead the team. Frank/Jim were oh so close this week as their Machine put up a solid 62 points, but still were a little short. A big time coaching blunder in the game as the Machine started Josh Reed on a bye, leaving Mike Anderson and his TD catch on the bench. I think a thank you card would be appropriate Mr. Tyler and Mr. Sanders.

Maulers 101    Manatees 61
Merv/Mike are on a roll as their Maulers continue to rip apart opponents each week. Torry Holt leads the balanced Maulers attack with 23. Holt has been a flat out stud this year, now holding the top spot in the WR points race. Ratt had his work cut out for him this week, as he faced the top team in the league with Priest on a bye. It was a somewhat respectable showing for the Manatees, but not nearly enough against the Maulers 100+ score. Priest is back for good (so Ratt hopes) so it is back to the battle for a wildcard spot.

Cossacks 79    Death 77
Sorry, I am still bitter...... next!

Elephants 90    Contributors 54
Break up the Elephants! Tom/Joel finally get the mighty Elephants clicking and they drop a big fat 90 on the Contributors. OUCH! It was the other Moss that did the damage for the Elephants, as Santana put 32 to lead the team. Tom passed up many a trade offer for his struggling Elephants players, and they responded in fine fashion as they finally get win #2. John/Eric finally get a respectable game from McNabb, but it went to waste against the big day from the Elephants. Was that the real Donovan, or was it the bad Atlanta defense? The Contributors playoff chances most likely rest on that answer.

Beach Bums 67    Wapati
In a battle of the top 2 teams in the C Division, Alford's Beach Bums take over the division lead with the win. A-Train had a nice return to health with 17, while Randy had the second best day by a player named Moss with 14. Boyd/Butch give up the lead in the division as their Wapati continue to struggle. Kitna didn't come through as he filled in at QB, while Staley was the lone player to score more than 8. Garcia and Moulds need to get back in the Wapati lineup soon.

Bandits 43    Destroyers 25
Al gets a much need win over the Destroyers, despite the low scoring effort from his Bandits. Al probably doesn't care that he got a bottom 3 finish, the win is what matters most. McCardell led the team with 14, while Marshall and Jake look set to return to the team in the near future. Steve/Joe get quite the disappointing effort as they lose their first division game. Not much to say about this week for the team, just regroup and know that the Manning/Harrison combo will surely rebound.

Filiricans 83    Fish 51
Johnny/Matt follow up last week's solid effort with a nearly identical 83 point game. The Filiricans get a solid game from Culpepper and lots of help as they try to close the gap on the Destroyers in the D division. Wayne/Rich get another solid effort from Bulger, but had 4 low scores leaving them on the losing side. Lewis is struggling to find the end zone consistently, something the Fish need to change as they try and keep up with the wildcard race.
