The scoring in week five came down a bit, but four teams still topped 100. We have two teams at 5-0, two teams at 0-5, and the rest straddling a 500 season. Three teams have scored exactly 573 points! And one has 573 points scored against! After five games and many scoring combinations, what are the odds of that? It is fitting in a very rare year. With four weeks to go, the play-off picture is still blurry. Here is a recap of week five action.
Browns @ Game Cocks; 106 – 83 GCocks
The Gamecocks have now hit their stride by winning their third straight. They were able to win despite the play of QB Brennan. He was shaky after coming back from injury and threw more interceptions then TD’S. When 24 is an off week, you know things are going good. The Cocks got a great game from RB Jones, and the rest of their position players scored in double digits. With Brennan now healthy, the Cocks look to roll. The Browns score 83 in another losing effort to fall to 0-5. The team responded well with double digit scoring, but was let down by the play of QB Bradford. He had a dismal day in a losing effort to Colorado, and his performance spelled doom on a rough day. The Browns are a good team, but the season has just about slipped away for the two time Champions.
Cossacks @ Lightning; 98 – 53 Sacks
The Sacks roll to remain perfect on the year. After squeaking by their last two games, they had plenty of breathing room in improving to 5-0. QB Woodson is proving a great fantasy QB posting a 30. The Sacks managed 98 while getting only two from stud Slaton. Coach Maze certainly has the fantasy mojo thus far, but fortunes can change in a hurry. The Lightning struggled once again, but their first rounder Jackson finally had a performance worthy of the pick. With the USC backfield hurting, RB Washington should perform well in the next few weeks. Hopefully they will be able to get in the win column.
Spartans @ Shamrox; 113 – 56 Spartans
Crabtree!!!!!!! The man is a flat out Fantasy God!!! He is rewriting the record books for fantasy receivers with yet another great game! The Spartans are getting production from the other roster spots to remain a dangerous team. Logic dictates the Crabtree gravy train will stop somewhere, but for now all we can do is shake our heads and marvel at the scoring. The Rox have a down week in which two receivers fail to make a catch. Stroughter was out with injury, but the vanishing act by Kelly left Coach Snyder scratching his head. With QB White’s injury, the Shamrox will have to scramble over the next few weeks. With a crowded play-off field emerging, the Rox cannot afford to stumble. Bernard and Bryant were bright spots, but the rest simply failed to show up.
Venom @ Stallions; 78 – 68 Venom
The Horses had an off week in a rare game in which they did not top 100. They had solid games from QB Dixon, Rice, Williams, and Burton. The play of Moore and the Oklahoma D were the deciding factors in this game. Despite the loss, the Stallions still maintain a three point lead in the C Division. The Venom are happy to get a W on the strength of Ian Johnson’s 33 on Thursday night. On Saturday the rest of the Team struggled, and scored just enough to hold off the Stallions. Torain failed to reach the Zone, and was injured with a Hip pointer. His status for Saturday is questionable. The Venom have been fighting the Injury bug this year, but hope to put it all together in week Six division play against the 5-0 DFarts.
Contributors @ Elephants; 87 – 77 Contributors.
The Contributors improve to 2-3 with a solid team effort. RB Patrick seems to have entrenched himself at RB, and should help the rest of the year. Bowman, Turner, and the LSU D scored in double digits. The Contributors won despite the off day of stud QB Holbrook. Ten points against a AA school is not what the coach had in mind. The Elephants squander a great chance to gain ground on the Stallions with a tough 10 point loss. McFadden, Stewart, Harvin, and Savage did their part, but QB Brohm lost the game with his seven point effort. In the fantasy game, its hard to overcome a weak performance at any position. The Elephants are still within striking distance with four games to go. Plenty of time in which to catch the Stallions in the final turn for home.
Predators @ Dragonfarts ; 103 -101 DFarts
Coach Merv’s Predators suffer another heart breaker in which they lose by a few points. Although they have scored 573 points, the same as the 5-0 Farts, they find themselves sitting at
2-3. The same can be said for the Stallions, who have the exact 573 points! This demonstrates how tough it is to win in Fantasy ball. The Predators had a great game, but lost on the play of the Texas Longhorns. Sweed's one point and the Texas D’S 2 doomed the Predators who only needed three points for the Win. The Farts got solid production from RB’S Forsett and Lane, but it was the play of QB Harrell who ultimately won the game. His league leading 49 point performance was too hard to overcome. The win brings the Farts record to a perfect 5 -0, and have a commanding six point lead in the B division. Failing a complete collapse, they will be a force in the post-season.
College Competitor Editorial:
I want to comment on the last game, and it is not a knock on Coach Ruschs’ fine team. The Farts are a great team, and it is not my intention to take any thing away from them. That said, the Texas Tech game in which they scored a merciless 75 points on a division two school was a complete joke, and in my opinion hurt the integrity of the fantasy game between the Farts and Predators. Harrell had a great game tossing five Td’s, but his back up came in and threw three more…Including a fifty yarder late in the fourth quarter. As a result, the Farts won the game by two points. This game illustrates how the “TEAM QB” concept in our league has run its course. In my opinion it should be discontinued, and we should go to a single named QB system.
I would hate for any one of us to be on the bad side of an eight TD, 75 point game. For the integrity of the league, this practice must end. Coach Leach is a heartless fool with no sense of sportsmanship. He kicked kids when they were clearly down…..and in the process kicked a proud Predator Team. To protect against another joke of a contest, the team QB should be eliminated. We deal with managing RB's, it is time to manage Quarterbacks the same way. We should only get the scores of the person who was drafted…period. END OF RANT. J
