Feel the Pain  round 1

Surprises abound in the playoffs and scrub-bowls this week. Three Division winners lose and the Machine greased it up to win the scrub bowl. If we had a top 8 this week the cutoff would have been 73, needless to say it was a very high scoring week.

They always say it’s hard to beat a team twice in the same season and held true this week in the Filiricans and destroyers game. This game was full, of coaching blunders as the Filiricans cut Brady who had 260 yards and two Td’s for Bledsoe who had a 1. They also benched WR Jackson of Seattle who lost his father that morning. Does anyone remember what happened the last time a player played the day of his father’s death? Farve last year went through that and proceeded to have one of his best games of his career. Guess what, Jackson did the same, but his numbers were parked on the Filirican bench. The Destroyers were just as bad. They benched Duckett , who then in turn went on to have his best game of his professional career, with 4 td’s . The game itself came right down to the wire The Destroyers held a 12 point lead going into Monday night with the Filiricans  still having Kennison. Kennison scored on a bomb at the very beginning of the game for an 11-point TD. He did nothing the rest of the game, not catching a ball. Steve, I’m sure was breathless at every pass thrown, hoping to keep Kennison out of the bonus. Things looked good, until the last 23 seconds of the game. Kennison scored on a short out pattern for his second catch and second TD, thus sending the Destroyers back to their homes for good, where they can now watch the playoffs from their armchair.

The Contributors , who were the number one seed fell to the  number eight seed, Gangreen 68-90. The Contributors had a great season, always finding a diamond in the rough, and getting the most out of them. This week it was L. Johnson, who had a 23. 68 is not a bad score either, most weeks it should be good enough for a win. The Gangreen were not intimidated though. They had 3 players score 20 or more and three others with 8. This game is all about timing as the Contributors just found out as they played a team that caught lightning in a bottle. John and Eric should be proud of their season as they were the most consistent team running all year. Too bad we weren’t in our old format were only 6 teams made the playoffs as they would have been home on a bye watching this one.

In the stinker game of the week, the Bandits beat the Pride 55-47. The Pride were one of only 3 teams the bandits could have beaten in the whole league. Again this is a game of timing and Al was quoted as saying “I would rather be lucky than good”. Al does have a good team, but not this week. The Pride saw the writing on the wall going into this game as they were playing badly going into this game. What made this game interesting was a the phone call I received from Larry just before kickoff of the Philly game. Just so happens Al was at my house when this phone call took place. The Pride only needed 8 from Owens to win the game. Owens could usually get 8 points in his sleep. Larry said, “We might as well put this one in the books”. That was a big mistake, as many a fantasy owners know, if you pop off it comes back and bites you in the ASS. Owens then had a 2 for the game and sent Larry back to Brighton with his head held low.

Last week Bennett had three TD’s on the Pain’s bench. Coach Karmazyn learned his lesson and put him back in the lineup. It’s a good thing he did, he had the game of his career and had 38 points. This one looked like it was going to be a barnburner as the pain held a 7 point lead going into Monday night with Bennett and Kinney still to play, and the Maulers with Green and Mason still to play. A betting man would have to have thought that the Maulers should be able to overcome that deficit. Early in the game Mason went down with an ankle, on a punt return, what he was doing returning punts is still anyones guess. Bennett then took advantage and went just plain crazy. Merv was heard grumbling all the way from California, “that LUCKY ASS MAZE”. Maze and Mike couldn’t have been happier watching this performance of a lifetime. If you were in Karmazyn’s house that night you would have seen Maze dancing with his 4 year old daughter singing something about going to the SEMI’s . She just laughed and danced with him not knowing why her dad was so happy, but she got a kick out of it. Hopefully she gets to dance with her dad again this week.

In Scrub Bowl 1, the Machine took charge of a very high scoring week and managed to edge out the Manatees and the Bums. Last weeks pickup of Hasselbach has given this team new hope, and they plan on trying to make it two in a row. If they get a 28 from the Buffalo defense again it is a possibility. If you didn’t hear, the Browns could only get 17 total yards of offense, I bet if Mullen played them , they could get more than 17 yards.

Record last week : 2-2

Season to date : 65-43
