Week #4
Week #4 saw the Christians and Elephants again lead the league in points, while just one team (Cows) remain undefeated. We are now at the halfway point of the regular season, and time is running out for many teams to get back in the playoff race. Hopefully everyone keeps up their interest in the league, and maintains their roster as playoff spots are all still up for grabs. We had our first fine of the year this week, so the 2002 Pizza Fund is growing! If anyone sees or talks to Carey Hawk, he has been MIA for almost a month now......no rosters, no scores. On to the action of week #4:
Death
76 Contributors 50
The
Commish's Death team gets the win over McSwain's Contributors, to improve to
3-1, and FINALLY gets their first top 6 finish of the year. The Death were lead
by big weeks from Portis and Oregon QB. The Death are in the thick of the
playoff race, a spot not to familiar in the college league for the Commish.
McSwain's team has yet another mediocre scoring week, as reliable Texas QB posts
25 points, but only their Kicker was able to help out with a double digit score.
These are not happy days for McSwain and the Contributor faithful, as the team
is now 0-4 and gets the mighty task of facing the league points leader Elephants
this upcoming week. Maybe the Contributors will bring in UNC coach Bunting to
knock off the top team next week, shaking things up is what this team needs.
Christians
113 Pride 77
Rusch's
team follows up last week's 123 point performance, with an equally convincing
113 point effort to turn back the Pride. The Christians got a 95 yard TD run
from their Nebraska QB to lead the way, and also received 10+ points from all
its players except one, who had 9. That is balance my friends, and the
Christians look to continue their high scoring streak next week against the
Stingrays. Hmmm, many of the Christian starters may be on the bench by half
time! Larry/Harry caught a break on the schedule last week, and had it even out
this week as the Pride post the 4th high score of the week, but it wasn't nearly
enough against the league high score. Solid weeks (again, and again, and again)
from FSU QB and Brunell lead the way for the pride. The early season injury to
top draft pick Suggs hasn't really hurt this team, as his replacement has kept
up the high scoring pace. The Pride are in the thick of the playoff race, and
this week's match up with the Maulers is huge for both teams!
Elephants
98 Titans 56
Mr. Tom
Brady continues his winning and high scoring ways with another convincing win
over the hapless Titans. Mr. Tom Brady gets his usual high scoring weeks from
Florida QB and Gaffney, along with 18 points from Cossack reject Askew. Mr. Tom
Brady now has the overall team scoring lead, a share of the high game sidepot
(Florida QB had 43 this week), and a share of the team points lead. Mr Tom Brady
is sitting pretty these days, and I must continue to call him Mr. Tom Brady out
of respect for the top team at the midway point of the year. Jeff's Titans
continue to stumble, and Jeff is left scratching his head yet again this week.
The Titans seem to give Jeff fits each week, leading to the weekly "What
If's" for Jeff, this week lead by Titan castoff Savage going off. Time is
running out for Jeff and his Titans, and it doesn't get any easier next week as
they face the only undefeated team left in the league, the Cows.
Q-Dogs
87 Stingrays 37
The Al
& Russ show continues its winning ways, as the Q-Dogs chomp away at the
helpless Stingrays to get the win and their fourth consecutive top 6 finish. The
Q-Dogs get a big week from their VT def to lead the way. Al & Russ are now
in a 3-way tie for the overall points lead, and next week is a showdown with
division rival Cossacks. I think Russ and Maze will be lighting up the message
board this week, as it is normally a war of words followed by a war on the field
whenever these two teams meet up. Merv and his Stingrays continue to limp
through the season, posting just 37 points this week. Merv can take a little
relief in knowing that his coaching decision to bench Clemson QB in favor of the
Wyoming QB wouldn't have made a difference anyway. Merv will take any and every
sign of hope for his team. Oh yea, the Stingrays get the red hot Christians next
week, ouch!
Cossacks
71 Redhawks 52
Maze gets
the needed win from his Cossacks, as they remain in the playoff and tough C
Division race after their win over the Redhwaks. Maze gets a solid week from BYU
QB and RB Burns to lead the way. Next up for the Cossacks is a huge division
game with the Q-Dogs. Maze will enjoy the victory more than any other this year
if his team can knock of the rolling Q-Dogs, so he says. Until Carey checks in
and shows signs of life, no commentary will be issued about his Redhawks
team.
Cows
58 Maulers 57
In the
game of the week, two previously undefeated teams went head to head in a knock
down drag out match up. In the end, Driver's Cows were left standing by the slimmest
of margins over the Maulers. Things did not start out well for Driver, as he
forgot about make up games, and submitted a lineup with one player short. The
Cows maintained their focus though, and got the win despite both teams scoring
well below their usual level. Driver now stands alone as the only undefeated
team in the league, but the Q-Dogs are right on their tail for the C Division
title. A match up next week with the Titans is crucial in the tight C Division
race. Mike's Maulers figured they had this week all wrapped up when the Cows
went a player short (in a normal Mauler week this would have done the Cows in),
but somehow the Maulers failed to put up their normally high scoring week that
we have become so accustomed to. Toefield suffered his first bad week of the
year, and that was a big turning point in the game. No time for Mike to let up,
as next week's game with the Pride will go a long way towards determining who
may walk away with the B Division title.
Weekly
Awards
QB of the
Week: Florida, Elephants 43 Points
Mr. Tom Brady gets a huge
performance from his QB, to lead the way to yet another win and also a share of
the high game sidepot.
RB
of the Week: Portis, Death 25 Points
The Commish uses the top RB
performance to advance his Death team to a surprising 3-1 record, and finally
gets a top 6 finish.
WR
of the Week: Caldwell, Titans 22 Points
Three weeks and counting........for the 3rd week in a row, a Florida WR gets the
top scoring performance of the week. This week it was the Titans WR turn, but it
wasn't enough for Jeff as he ironically faced the Elephants, who are lead by the
Florida QB and the other WR Gaffney.
