Week #15
After a month hiatus, the
Commish's Corner is back! The last month has been a very trying experience for
the Commish, with vacations and moving to beautiful Thornton, CO. If I ever have
to deal with another inept AT&T employee, I may just strangle someone! But
for now, the Commish is back up and running (well, kind of....if you consider
AOL up and running :>)
Week #15 featured some very low scoring affairs, due to the lack of games M-Th
because of the All-Star break. This issue of playing during the week of the
All-Star game will definitely be discussed for next year.
Thanks to everyone for their patience through my move, lets get back to final stretch of the baseball season......
Lightning
1 Beginners Luck 4
Coach Alford keeps up his winning ways and holds of
division rival Lightning 4-1. The Beginner's still onto first place in the A
Division, and are the only expansion team to be leading a division right now. A
big week for Higgy lead the way for the Beginner's who are getting ready for the
final sprint towards a division title in their first year. Coach Larry is still
struggling to score points each week. Pierre was the only Lightning position
player to reach double digits, that is how not to win more than one game a week.
Larry's playoff hopes are all but over at this point.
Destroyers
3 Fury 2
Coach Steve follows up his
record setting week (yes, the Destroyers scored a new league high 212 points the
week before) with another top 10 finish and 3 wins. Oakland pitching and
Gonzalez continues to lead the Destroyers who now sit a top the B Division.
Coach Steve is poised for a playoff run, and the division is his to loose at
this point. Coach Rogan's Fury sneak away with two wins, both via a tie-breaker
on sat and Sun. As John said himself, kind of a weasely way to win 2 games, but
the Fury need the W's as they are still in wildcard playoff race.
Wiseguys
1 Cobras 4
Coach Maze is making a
late-season push towards the playoffs and his Cobras rub-out the Wiseguys in
convincing fashion. Floyd continues to give the Cobras the needed spark, and
Coach Maze has put himself within 3 points of the division lead. Good work Maze,
I know all your fan club is rooting for you. (Ahhh that would be his wife and
kids for you scoring at home.....well, maybe just his kids :>) The Wiseguys
suffer the near sweep to dreaded rival Maze, but the Wiseguys are sitting in
solid wildcard position, but need to get back on the winning track real soon.
Coaches Chris and George were obviously disappointed in the effort against the
Cobras, but then they loose out on a top 10 finish via a tie-breaker.....now
that is kicking a dog when it is down!
Barracudas
3 Stingrays 2
Coaches Bert & Pam get the
needed 3rd win over the Stingrays in a real low scoring affair. The 'Cudas are
hanging around the playoff race but need a few good weeks to put themselves in
for sure. Scoring 80 points is normally not good, but it worked for them this
week. Coach Merv is doing all he can to save the sinking Stingrays ship. Losing
Brown hurts his LA pitching staff even more, but the 'Rays are still in the
playoff hunt. If the ship takes on much more water though, the Myers's boyz may
just have to buy a new ship! :>)
Hummer
2 Contributors 3
Coach McSwain is finally getting
his players healthy and his Contributors look to make a run at the playoffs
these last few weeks. They posted the 2nd high score of the week, so maybe a
Junior lead Contributors squad will prove to be a playoff team after all. What
is that? Junior tweaked his groin today???? Ohhh...just kidding, it has been a
long season and Coach John has banged his head into the wall enough this year
already. Coach Tyler has lost his lead in the B Division which he held for most
of the year, and another sub .500 week didn't help. On the bright side, Vladi is
finally heating up and come playoff time, the cagey veteran Tyler always seems
to find a way to make some noise in the playoffs. Be very wary of this
team.........
Clippers
2 Puppies 3
I am not writing much about this
match-up, as I have spent entirely to much time on it already. Harry sent scores
in, the scores were pretty accurate but I go cross-eyed by the time I get done
reading them! Ron racks up another no scores fine, so I have to double check
everything. Next........
Connection
1 Oysters 4
The battle of the century turned
out to be like all other big fights.....a dud! Coach JR stakes his claim as the
team to beat this year with a decisive 4 win week of fellow powerhouse
Connection. A solid week for the Oysters and they continue to run away with the
D Division. They will be on a bye week #1 of the playoffs......bet the house on
it. Coach Rose is left wondering what happened to his team????? A very weak 66
total points this week has to be just a one week wonder. Don't kid yourselves,
the Connection are still for real and the team to beat. The Connection managed
to score 0 points on M-Th, which is the same total that Albert Belle had this
week, go figure?
Redbirds
1 S.T.L.4
Coach Woog has to be thrilled we
played on All-Star week, as his team puts up the high score in the league and
takes 4 wins to keep their playoff hopes alive. Lead by Vidro and Juan with top
weeks, the S.T.L. are keeping the dream alive. Coach Hanshe manages to score the
4th highest score of the week, but only gets 1 win and the bonus win to show for
it. The Redbirds are on the outside looking in at the playoff race right now,
and another 1 win week will end their season for all purposes.
Blackjacks
3 Intimidators 2
In a close match, Coach Phillips
gets the deciding 3rd win with a solid Sunday game. The Blackjacks still have
ground to make up if they want to make the post-season, but they seem to be
getting solid efforts the last few weeks and might just have enough to sneak
into the playoffs. Both teams scored in the top 10, but that is just not enough
right now for Coach Ed & Jeff's Intimidators. They to need a few solid weeks
to have any chance of moving on to the next level.
Death
4 X-Men 1
The Commish is wondering why his team decided
now to start playing??? Last week the Death scored 210 points, and won 5 (though
lost the side-pot to baby brother Steve......bastard!) and this week score just
enough to hold off the X-Men. The Commish had pretty much written this year off,
but there may be hope, no matter how remote the chances. Heck, maybe one of
players will score 31 points next week against Maze, stranger things have
happened. :>) Coach Al still has his X-Men in fine shape for the playoffs,
but missed a golden opportunity to make up ground on the division leading
Connection. The X-Men are solid, and will be around come playoff time, as Al
usually is.
Week
#15 Awards:
Player of the Week: Vidro, S.T.L. 30
Points
Vidro leads Coach Woog's team to the league high score for the week.
Pitching
Staff of the Week: Mets, Redbirds 52 Points
The Amazing Mets pitching is finally back! Coach Hanshe has been waiting all
year for them to come around, unfortunately it was not enough as his team still
got beat 4-1.
Boxscore
Blunder of the Week: Puppies
This award will be retired at years end and renamed the "Pound Puppies No
Scores Again Award". The fines are now at $30.
Quote of the
Week: Coach Maze, Cobras
"Let it be known that after the M-Th loss to Londono, he e-mailed me, as
the loser that is one, "You'll be out of it by the weekend". I
proceeded to sweep the weekend and send him sniveling back home." Ahhhhh,
Maze at his finest! Gee, I wonder what it will be like come playoff time if the
Cobras get in?
That is all for now........thanks again for your patience over the last month!
Good luck to everyone in week #16!
