NEW OWNER MAKES LEAGUE HISTORY!

VENOM SCORES 143!

The 2009 season is on, and the first week made history. The league welcomed Mike Swofford as a new Coach at the helm of the Lumberjacks. As he is the future son –in-law of Stallions owner Mike Myers, he was recruited at the last minute. He did a good job preparing for the draft in just a few days, and by all accounts his first pick looked to be a good one. RB Lagarette Blount was destined for a great season after scoring 17 td’s last year in split duty. Unfortunately for the new owner, his number one pick turned into a mental case opening night of the league. After rushing for negative yards and losing to Boise State, he was taunted at the end of the game and responded with a right to the jaw of a Boise State defensive end. To make matters worse, he attacked his own team mate and tried to go into the stands after a fan.

The news came down the next day that Blount was suspended for the year, and as such a number one pick was gone. History was made in our league, number one picks have been lost in the first week before, but never as a result of a right hand to the jaw and a meltdown that looked like it was staged by professional wrestling. I don’t believe we will ever see such an entertaining opening day. Welcome to the league Mr. Swofford.

Heisman Trophy winner Bradford was lost for 3-4 weeks after getting unceremoniously tossed to the turf by a rampaging Mormon. The Contributors drafted him number three in the first round, and are now exhaling when it was determined it was just a sprain. There is a bye week in the time he needs to heal, so he caught a break.

Scoring was down overall when compared to prior first week action, with the exception of the Venom who exploded for 143 Pts. A quick review of league history revealed it is one of the highest scores ever. It still did not top Merv Myers Predators who scored over 160 pts in the first week of 2005!

After the first week, each division has two 1-0 teams and two 0-1 teams. There are eight weeks left, but no one wants to start 0-2 to begin the New Year.

The Competitor will have a different look this year. In the past each game was highlighted, this sometimes proved tedious. Each week there will be a headline that captures the week just ended, a summary of each division, highlights of exceptional performances, and expanded coverage on how the year is developing including division races and potential play-off berths.

Because of time-constraints some editions may be shorter than others. If anyone wants to write an edition of The Competitor please let me know. Also, if anyone wants to submit lines/odds for games for each coming week, please send them to me and I will include them.  These should be in by each Thursday. Sometimes lines are fun to read, and it highlights how strong/weak each team is perceived by other owners of the league. I would encourage as many owners as possible to send them in.

I want to congratulate Jeff Snyder for winning his first College Championship last year. The two of us have met in the Championship game two years running, and I was happy to see him take the trophy. We meet once again in week two…

I am looking forward to another great year!!! I love this game!!

Jeff Myers
