Week #1
After a few years off, the weekly report makes it's triumphant return. A new found career has provided the Commish with the actual proper balance of work/home life. In a new twist for the weekly report, there will be one report that details the action in both NFL 1 and NFL 2. It should be much easier that way..... I hope!
The draft went well at the new location and looks to be a solid place for future years. So the 2006 Fantasy Football season gets under way, and it was a bit of a down week with scoring on the low side. Amazingly only a few transactions after week one, so maybe the veteran owners and their patient approach are finally rubbing off on some trigger happy teams. Then again, Doggy Style will show anyone the door, any week. On to the games....
NFL 1
Shamrox 68 Fish 65
The Fish had control of this game going into Monday night. With the first MNF
doubleheader ever, the newly re-named Shamrox had the benefit of three players
remaining. Wayne/Rich were done after Sunday and got some help early with
Shamrox TE Cooley putting up just 2. The Commish had no worries as he had the
confidence to draft Tomlinson #1 and he paid early dividends with a workmanlike
14 point effort to help clinch the win. McNabb led the Fish and looks solid
throwing to #18 "Anti-TO".
Machine 90 Da Bros 42
Obviously Frank and Jim knew what they were doing in the Machine war room draft
day. Those 10 minutes per pick were well worth it as they post the top score in
NFL 1 with a impressive 90. Baltimore D was the top scoring player/unit in the
entire league week 1 with 32 points, with plenty of support from RB's Westbrook
and Bell. Bros'
QB Favre looked very, very, very old in week one going against the tough Chicago D.
Jeff George is available again, I heard Randall Cunningham is working out and
Archie Manning is considering a comeback to really drive Mrs. Manning
nuts........ maybe GB and the Bro's should both consider an upgrade at QB.
Persuasion 70 Filiricans 29
Newcomers Steve, Marvin and Ray get win one in the Persuasions' inaugural game.
Not much from their skill position players, but 45 from the bottom three was
more than enough to get their first W. Not much to say about the Filiricans.
Johnny blames it on Matt. I am sure Johnny will hear it from a few people this
week, Matt's fault or not.
Destroyers 60 Mustangs 57
Veteran owners Steve/Joe show no mercy on the expansion Mustangs and comeback
for the win. Soft numbers from the Washington connection (might be the worst
QB-WR connection in the history of fantasy football) almost did the Destroyers
in, but Gates rescued the team with a late TD. Ted and his Mustangs hung tough
in week one, but lack of production from their WR's was their downfall. To add
to it, de-activated WR Porter was seen pumping his fists when Gates scored the
TD to secure the Destroyers win. Obviously not much respect for first year coach
Ted from the problematic WR.
Gangreen 81 Maulers 54
Bill/John's excellent adventure got off on a winning note with a balanced attack
to make up for a "disappointing" week by stud Larry. With Damon Huard
quarterbacking KC for the foreseeable future he will certainly be instructed to
hand off to stud Larry on 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and most likely 6th down. Of
course defenses will now leave the WR's uncovered and put everyone in the box
against stud Larry. KC more dependant on stud Larry is a scary thought.
Merv/Mike got a solid game from Warner who didn't look old and a big game from
Anti-TO. Banged up Portis and Jackson looked respectable week one, so they will
be back in the lineup for the Maulers in week two.
Pain 65 CRMO 62
Maze gets the nod over JR/Corey's expansion CRMO squad in a close game.
Thankfully the Pain didn't need either idiot kicker on their roster as
Manning-Burress provide solid connection results. Seems the CRMO fans will
probably have the same chant week 2 as local Denver fans will.... "Let Jay
Play!" Plummer killed the Broncos and killed any chance of getting JR/Corey a
win in their first NFL 1 game.
Contributors 47 Pride 45
If this was the national TV game of the week, they would have switched to other
NFL action just before halftime. While a close game, it featured just a defense
with 18 and a kicker with 24. Not one other player/unit could muster more than 7
on either team. John was happy for the Contributors win and thankful for the
sleep it allowed him to catch up on. Larry didn't like the loss, but was
thankful for the opportunity to cut the grass without missing anything.
Virus 71 Doggy Style 61
We have a Jamal Lewis sighting!!!!! Contrary to reports he retired a few years
ago, Lewis actually showed up in a boxscore and helped guide Brian's Virus to a
win. Throw in a 87yd TD catch for TE Miller and they had just enough for the W.
Doggy Style left double bad hammy Smith in the lineup and could have used a
replacement to possibly get a win. Jeff/Scott have already submitted the first
rule change proposal for 2007. It reads: "If a TE for a team
from Western PA somehow catches a pass from a guy that should have retired 5
years ago, and somehow manages to rumble down the field towards a TD, then gets
knocked out on the 2 yard line, and the NFL refs somehow miss it, the UAL
Fantasy replay booth should have the power to call down to the field for a booth
review."
NFL 2
Razor Clams 62 Lemurs 43
The Lemurs campaign for a unprecedented three peat in NFL 2 get off on the wrong
foot. Westbrook was the lone shining star for the Lemurs as they put up a
franchise low in points. First overall pick Alexander is well on his way to
keeping the Madden curse alive. Ray's Clams led by M.Vick get the win as M.Vick
tries to show he is more than just a running QB. Clam's RB Brown did little in
terms of yardage but took it to the house twice to seal the win.
Destroyers 91 Vikings 38
Solid day for the Commish and Steve as their team puts up the top score in NFL
2. McNabb led the way on offense as he proves it is much easier to play QB
effectively without a knife in his back. Brian's Vikings were just plan bad in
week one. Maybe their star player should focus more on football and less on
commercials with Drew pimping Burger King.
Connection 78 Maulers 60
Scott/Chris get a win over Moby's Maulers thanks to a huge game from their
kicker. Now there is something you don't type often! Connection QB Palmer looks
healthy amazingly but wasn't needed to put up big numbers in this one. Maulers
QB Culpepper looks somewhat healthy in his recovery, but will need to step it up
a bit in future weeks to help balance out the Maulers attack.
Doublestuffed 64 Club CC 56
Fran/Billy hold on for a win thanks to a big game from Gonzo and a late FG from
Brown. The real question for Doublestuffed fans is how soon will they pull the
trigger on the Romo for Bledsoe QB change that seems inevitable. Troy/Trent get
decent numbers but the Rivers-McCardell connection may be the 2nd worst
connection in Fantasy Football history. I leave that connection at #2 for now,
as it was Rivers first game as a starter. Club CC RB Bush showed flashes of
great things to come. Somebody should have been fired from the Texans this week
for not drafting Bush. Next week, too. And, the week after that.
Nuetrilizers 62 Lunatics 44
Let's see..... Tomlinson wins the RB sidepot two years in a row, seems to be the
most "sure thing" of the top 3, and he slips to Boyd at #2. Boyd will take a
fired up Tomlinson who will be out to prove he is still the top dog in the
league. Week one..... check! Now if he could just get the damn mail sorted
properly. JR/Corey were really excited to get the Denver QB in both leagues
draft day. Nothing like killing your team in both leagues! God help poor Jake if
he cuts off JR in his sporty new Honda Element. Umm, isn't that the car that
like 37 clowns can pile out of?
Thunder 76 Dragons 73
Merv/Mike get expansion win number one in the featured game of the week. The
Dragons put up a good fight in the highest scoring/closest game in both leagues.
Decent numbers all around for the Thunder who looking to add a new league
championship to their impressive resume. Steve/Marvin must have been a bit
preoccupied now that they have a team in both leagues. A respectable 73 point
showing was fine, but a dnp for Smith and a dnp for sub Gabriel practically gave
the game away. Umm, guys........ we extended the lineup deadline to 11am Sunday
morning this year............ FOR JUST THIS TYPE OF CIRCUMSTANCE!!!!!
Bombers 53 Gangreen 44
Nothing like a win to put all the QB in a motorcycle accident and now blows out
an appendix stories to rest. Al/John didn't have a great day from their Bombers,
but Brees holds the fort down for Big Ben who looks to return in week 2. I
wonder how many times Al was asked this week "did you know Johnny drafted half
the Steelers roster?" Bill/John get a very mediocre day from their team as they
prove the fact that NFL teams winning doesn't always translate to success in
fantasy. Bulger gets a big win over Denver and Indy Def holds off Baby Peyton,
but neither produced fantasy wise.
Bulldogs 80 Wide Right 62
In the battle of new teams, Jesse gets the win as his Bulldogs post the 2nd high
score in the league. A huge 32 point day from the Baltimore Defense led the way,
offsetting a disappoint fantasy game from top pick Manning. A decent
showing from the Grandestaff's in their return to UAL Fantasy Football. A big
game from RB Gore led the team as Gore shows the potential to be the SOTD.
(Steal Of The Draft for those un-hip folks out there). A relatively quiet
fantasy day from the Right's stud WR combo leaves plenty of room for better
things to come.
Each week I'll wrap up the weekly report with a weekly "The good, the bad and the ugly". For week one...
The Good: Defense, defense and defense. They have always said defense wins football games. Mostly true this week but the defenses sure led the way in scoring this week in both leagues. While just two skill players posted 20+ scores in week one, there was 3 defenses that managed 26+ in week one.
The Bad: We extended the lineup deadline this year and still had several players that were known by early Sunday morning to not be dressing for their game. Throw on top of it a few backups that weren't playing either and not many took advantage of the new rule. I sat at home Sunday waiting for the email to explode with activity or the phone to ring off the hook....... the calls/emails just never came. Owners, enjoy the rule the way it was intended!!!!
The Ugly: While Trent Green's head slamming into the turf was a frightening sight, it was no match for the U-G-L-Y performance of the Filiricans in week one!
Good luck to everyone in week #2! I am outta here......
