THE COLLEGE COMPETITOR                             Edition 3.1

Where does the time go? This marks the first edition of the third year of publishing the Competitor….Hence edition 3.1  The first week is in the books, and it was marred by the loss of a Fantasy stud to injury.  Michael Bush’s season ended on a single play in week one, and with his loss the Story lines of the season are immeasurably altered.  Every season starts the same way….with draft preparation and excitement.  It’s a shame that any team lose its first round pick to injury in week one. Alas… it happened…It happened before, and yes it will happen again. Here is a recap of week one action.

DragonFarts @ Elephants ; 83-75 DFarts

A very competitive game that was not decided until Monday night. The Elephants had a chance going into the rivalry between Florida State and Miami, but Booker picked up right where he left off last year lost in an ineffective running game. Coach Brady’s squad performed very well with stellar performances from Irons and Russell, but his squad could not overcome the weak outing of the Cal Defense. The Farts start the season strong with great games from Peterson and the Va Tech defense. The Farts look strong, but it may be tough for Peterson to overcome a weak passing game... He is a great player, but can he run through 6 in the Box??? We shall see…

Predators @ Game Cocks ; 89-65 Gamers

The Cocks overcome the dismal showings of two of three RB’S to slay the Predators.  Slaton carried the day with 26 points and more then made up for the two points Darby and Charles garnered.  The rest of the squad performed very well to pick up the slack. If The GameCocks can get production out of the rest of their Running backs, they will be a force this year. The Predators could not get any consistency out of the middle of their line-up. Out of the 65 points scored, Ohio QB Smith and the Michigan D accounted for 43.… Not how Coach Merv drew up the Gameplan.

Browns @ Venom ; 112-101 Browns

A very competitive and high scoring contest.  It’s a shame someone had to lose…and I do mean…IT’S A SHAME “SOMEONE” HAD TO LOSE !… The Browns had a great game to seal high game for the week. WR Ginn collected Td’s on two of the four passes he caught to illustrate how dangerous he is. The Browns were able to explode despite having Lynch and Jarrett totally neutralized. That will not happen often the rest of the year, so Coach Rose should be very happy with his squad. As for the Venom???...good game...Bad Match-Up…One coaching Blunder...Lets move on... J

Contributors @ Shamrox ; 108 - 65 Rox

Coach Snyder has had to endure a few frustrating seasons, but this may be the year it all comes together for him. The Shamrox had double-digit production from every spot except QB to slam the door on the Contributors. A great games from RB Young and WR Johnson led the way. The only question mark will be if Charles has to split two much time in the backfield this year. All in all things are looking up in Rox Town. The Contributors got the expected great game from The Texas Tech QB, but had little support from the rest of the squad. This writer speaks from experience…even 50 from the Tex tech QB means nothing if the rest lay down. The Contributors have some holes to fill, but with the Red Raider Signal caller behind center they have a head start every week.

Cossacks @ Lightning ; 101 – 75 Sacks

The Cossacks are back!!!!!!! Wait…were they ever here to begin with? …. Kidding Coach Maze! J The Cossacks had a very strong game to begin the season, and have a formidable line-up. Three Running backs were in the line-up and all three produced! That will go a long way in fantasy ball. Bernard picked up where he left off, and Va Tech Orr looks like he is poised for a great year. The lightning had a respectable game scoring from top to bottom, but they could not keep up the Cossacks firepower on this day.  Quinn had a sub par day failing to throw a TD. The lightning may have to shore up their RB core if they are to compete the rest of the year.

Stallions @ Redhawks ; 75 –69 Stallions

The defending champs catch a break…..a Break of Bush’s leg! Going into the game on Sunday the Horses had a comfortable lead, but Coach Mike knew with Bush still to go was 34 points comfortable? Nope! Bush scored 28 in the first half! Rumor has it Coach Mike said out loud he wished Bush would break a leg going into the second half, and he got his wish! Coach Mike felt bad even kidding about such a thing, What a shame…one has to feel for the powerful Running Back.. The Redhawks season may have ended with the snap of the fibula….. Very Sad….The Horses escaped with a six-point victory in a game marred by extreme bad luck.

This years’ editions of the Competitor will end with a segment called “WoudaShoudaCouda” It will highlight the stellar performances of players pulling splinters out of their collective behinds. In the past, these have been called “Coaching Blunders”…I would like to think they are not Coaching Blunders but well planned, tactical moves that went awry. Here are a few on opening weekend.

Venom – WR Baker, FLORIDA… 9 Catches One hundred plus yards, TD.

Elephants –Booker in place of Texas WR Sweed

Both lost…..But they “Woudashoudacouda” Won!

I Love This Game!!!!
