Week #8
My how time flies when you winless! Hard to believe but there is just one week left in the regular season. It has been a strange year with many twist and turns to the action on the field. Injuries and lack of accurate playing status info have been a huge factor this year. A brief look at the standings and we have three division champs already crowned. The Stingrays, Pride and Titans all have wrapped up a spot in the playoffs. The wildcard spots are all still up for grabs. The Death, Redhawks and Dragonfarts have all been eliminated from the playoff race. The Dragonfarts had the top performance in the league in week 8, as well posted the high score of the year with 125. A nice comeback week for Dave after a frustrating season.
How will the wildcard shake out? Here is a
breakdown of where teams stand:
Cossacks & Elephants both have 15 points, and control their own destiny. A win
and their in, a loss and they may need help.
Aldoggies and Cows each have 13 points. They need a win to place themselves in
contention, a loss and they need major help. The Cows defeated the Aldoggies in
week 5, so they hold the tiebreaker.
The Maulers have 12 points, while the Contributors have a 11. They both need a
win and lots of help. They may already be eliminated based on tiebreakers, but
there is to many scenarios to decipher.
It will be an interesting weekend, so many possibilities for the final 3 wildcard spots!
Here is a look at the week 8 action:
Maulers 83
Redhawks 80
Mike gets the narrow win to stay in the
playoff race, thanks to a big day from Ohio St defense with 30. The Maulers also
got 22 from Pearman to make up for a couple of zeros. Brian/Carey get the tough
loss, which is highlighted by starting Cedric Houston who was off. That blunder
was costly for the Redhawks, and strange considering they did bench Tenn. QB,
knowing he was on a bye.
Contributors 58
Death 44
John/Brett finally get back on the winning
side after a long losing streak. Nothing fancy for the Contributors as Davis
finally played and responded with 14. The Commish's Death lose again, same old
story! Will the Death go winless for the year? Hard to bet against it!
Cossacks 106
Aldoggies 66
Maze/Sturken have the Cossacks on a roll, as
they crack the century mark in another impressive win. The Cossacks were led by
a finally healthy Roberson with 33, and nearly every player in double digits.
Watch out for the Cossacks come playoff time, provided they get in. Al/Russ drop
a crucial game that could have put them in the driver's seat for a wildcard
spot. A nice game from Pitt QB with 29 was the bright spot, but now the
Aldoggies are fighting for their playoff lives the final week.
Stingrays 104
Cows 61
Merv wraps up the division title with an
lopsided win over the Cows. The ASU combo was clicking for the Stingrays as
Walter and Hagen combined for 47. The Stingrays are tied with the Pride for the
most team points, so the final week is meaningful for Merv. Tom's Cows drop to
the back of the wildcard race with this loss. The Cows had a nice game from
Benson, but were will short of being in this game. A must win for the Cows in
the final week coming up.
Pride 102
Titans 91
Larry/Harry get the win to wrap up the B
Division as they win a shootout with the Titans. Frustrating for the Pride is
the fact they score over 100, but finish 4th for the week. Bell was the start
for the Pride with 37 and Fitzgerald continues to shine with 29. Jeff's Titans
lose the high scoring affair, but wrap up the C Division in the process. It has
been a strange year for the defending champs as they have scored well all year,
but with this win just now get back to .500. Perry finally bounces back for the
Titans with 27, and the Titans will get the chance to defend their title on the
field in the playoffs.
Dragonfarts 125
Elephants 60
Dave's team breaks out in fine fashion as
they post the top score in the league this year in a trouncing of the Elephants.
Cadillac Williams goes off to lead the Dragonfarts as he puts up 52 points. The
6 TD performance by Williams is the 2nd best of the year, and most likely a
sidepot winner in "normal" seasons. Tom's team had a chance to claim a wildcard
spot, but it was not to be. The Elephants got 19 from Fulton but were still
doubled up by the huge Dragonfarts week.
Good luck to everyone in week #9! I am outta here......
