Playoffs
Round #1
Things went according to plan in round one of the playoffs, as both of
the higher seeds advanced on to the next round. The Death and Cossacks both had
solid weeks, which was needed as they both had to score in the 80's to win their
respective games. The season comes to a close for both the Maulers and Q-Dogs.
Next up for the round one winners are the top two powerhouse teams, the
Elephants and the Cows. The same could not be said for the Scrub Bowl results,
as there was a surprise winner and a surprise winning score. Let's see how the
week came to be........
Death
89 Maulers 73
The Commish is out to
prove that his normally low scoring team is deserving of being in the
postseason. One week down, two more to go for the Cinderella Death team. The
Death picked a good week to crack the 80 point barrier for the first time this
year, as they turn back Mike's Maulers. Big weeks from Oregon QB and RB Hurst
lead the way for the Death. Hurst posted a 24 point game, but got 2 rush TD's in
the last 5 minutes of the game to lead Washington to a comeback win. The Commish
looked at the Washington boxscore with 8 minutes to go in the game, and was a
little frustrated that he didn't start Stallworth and his decent game instead of
Hurst. Then the Commish lamented the fact that their Pittsburgh Def had a big
game against VT (that was a shocker!), while their starting Def had just a 4
point game. The Commish was just about ready to throw in the towel! Patience
Commish, patience! Joey H. then throws 6 TD passes in the late game to secure
the win. Maybe, just maybe the Death have a fighting chance against the might
Elephants? Probably not, but the Commish is just happy to be along for the ride!
Mike spent Saturday watching football and most likely throwing things at the TV.
The Maulers had some questionable players going into Friday, as Toefield was
still listed on the injury report and Bryant was "supposedly"
suspended for the game this weekend. Mike made the safe play and benched both
players. Come playoff time, this seemed to be the best approach as having 2
starters not play would be lethal. So what happened? Toefield and Bryant both
played, and both scored 20+ points in their games. Mike was left shaking and
scratching his head wondering why he ever trusted a college injury report. This
has happened several times this year to Mike, and this one was crucial to the
Maulers championship dreams. A good season for the Maulers, they were
competitive for most of the year. Disappointing probably sums up Mike's year the
best though, the Maulers should have won the division and should have won this
game. Call it the "Luck of the Death", it happened not once but twice
to Mike and his Maulers. Mike will be back, and I am sure back in the playoffs
again next year, a spot the Maulers seem to be in every year. Next up for the
Death is the Elephants, will the "Luck of the Death" continue? Stranger
things have happened!
Cossacks
82 Q-Dogs 78
The trash talking was kept
to a minimum this week between Russ & Maze, as both teams seemed very
focused on the big game ahead. The Cossacks jumped out to a huge lead on
Thursday, as Maze got 55 points from 2 players, while the Q-Dogs got 10 points
from 2 players. Maze had this game already put in the win column and went about
his business the rest of the week with not much to worry about. Imagine his
surprise Saturday night when he returns from work and starts adding up the
scores. The Q-Dogs got big games from Diedrick and Williams and were right back
in the game. The Cossacks got a big 18 point game from TE Graham (a late season
addition, ex-Pride player) to get the needed points and hold off the Q-Dogs by
just 4 points. Up next for the Cossacks is the still undefeated Staleys, errr.....I
mean Cows. The Al & Russ show plays out their final performance of the year,
a performance that was solid but just not enough against the Cossacks. Another
solid year for Al, and his midseason replacement Russ. Hopefully Al is back to
his usual top game come basketball season, that might be the medicine he needs
to get back the fantasy edge he was struggling to find earlier in the year. Many
thanks to Russ for helping out a friend during the troubled times. The Q-Dogs
will back, and probably in the playoffs again next year, a place that Al is all
to familiar with.

WOW! Talk
about a little to late! The 3 lowest ranked teams in the league at the end of
the regular season post the 3 top scores in week #1 of the Scrub Bowl! All 3
teams even outscored the playoff teams this week, and all with solid scores.
Strange......very strange! Merv and his Stingrays walk away with the $30 prize
this week, lead by a big 40 point game from RB Griffin (late season addition,
ex-Pride player) along with a 23 point game from RB Pinnock. Carey cracks the
century mark for the first time this year, and McSwain post his top score of the
year as well. Should make for an interesting 2 more weeks of the Scrub Bowl.
